Internships and Scholarships

Internships

The FES African Union Cooperation Office and the FES African Migration Policy Center  offer internship opportunities!

Tasks:

Depending on the current activities at the time of the internship, interns will work individually and closely with office colleagues and project partners. The intern will be a part of both the FES African Union Cooperation office (FES AU) as well as the FES African Migration Policy Centre (FES AMPC) – both are located at the same office premise. Interns are involved in activities such as research, event planning, general administration and may attend seminars and conferences in Addis Ababa. Interns will help to write reports and minutes, conduct thematic research as well as support the office staff in performing day-to-day business functions.

Requirements:

The duration of an internship should be between 2 to 4 months (because of special visa regulations, internships of non-residents in Ethiopia cannot be longer than 90 days). Candidates should have obtained a Bachelor’s degree or be in the final stages of their Bachelor or Master program in a field relevant to FES’ work (i.e. Social/Political sciences, Economics, International Law, Journalism, African Studies etc.). They should have a demonstrated interest in social, development and/or political issues. Joining the teams of FES AU and AMPC, the intern should preferably have an interest in the working areas of both projects. Interns are expected to be able to work independently and have good English communication, research and social media skills. The working language in the office is English.

Application process:

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. The internship will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. According to our regulations, please note that FES is not able to provide for accommodation or bear further costs incurred, such as flights, visa fees, food allowances or insurances. These expenses must be carried by the applicant. As a general rule, the FES will pay a monthly allowance.

The application to internships between January and July 2025 is now open. The choice is expected to be made in early August 2024. Short-listed candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview.

Applications should be sent to info.african-union(at)fes.de including the following documents of one page each:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A letter of motivation (including the preferred time period of the internship)

We’re looking forward to receiving your application!

The Scholarship Program of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

The promotion of young talent has been one of the founding principles of the FES. The first scholarships were awarded to particularly talented young individuals from a working class milieu who were taking an active part in the young democracy of the Weimar Republic.

For the FES therefore, it is not only the applicants' academic achievement but also their social and political involvement and their personal attitudes that play an important part in the selection process.

Who is eligible?

The FES supports students from public or state-approved universities and from polytechnical colleges. It supports all academic subjects and postgraduate programmes. It is also possible for non-German students to apply for the scholarship programme.

In order to find out more about the application process and who to contact please visit the FES Scholarship Department website.
