Trilateral UN-EU-AU Cooperation in Peace and Security in Africa

A web-based public dialogue on Trilateral UN-EU-AU Cooperation in Peace and Security in Africa was organized by the FES AU and IGD (Institute for Global Dialogue) on November 5^th, 2020. The dialogue is based on the policy brief on “UN-EU-AU Cooperation in Peace and Security: the need for more coherence and coordination”. The policy brief explores the evolution of the strategic partnerships between the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU), and the United Nations (UN) considering the complex, unconventional, and evolving dynamics of peace and security threats in Africa necessitating a multilateral and collective response. Sustainable financing for African peace and security initiatives with increased African ownership and modes of cooperation between the AU, EU, and UN are analyzed. Furthermore, recommendations on how to render trilateral cooperation on APSA more effective are outlined.

By engaging a broad range of stakeholders in the public dialogue, various perspectives were gathered on UN-EU-AU cooperation in peace and security in Africa particularly in peace support operation, financing, and institutional collaboration to address the structural drivers of conflict in Africa.  As well, the discussion helped to reinforce and concretize the provided policy recommendations in the policy brief. The discussion will allow to shape current debates on trilateral UN-EU-AU cooperation in peace and security in Africa and to feed the results into the political process on different levels (UN, EU, AU).
